Artists Reception
Sunday, February 12, 2012
12-6pm
Tim A. Fleming, age 58, in his fifth show at the gallery will present 58 images images he created 2001 to 2011 and considers his favorite work. Tim is a constant visual investigator and has traveled the western states in search of his images.. These days it seems that everyone is a photographer. What sets Tim aside is that he shows the depth of vision only achieved by an artist/craftsman that has spent decades honing his artistic and technical skills. This skillset gives him a wide assortment of techniques and tools and a good chance to produce exceptional images. He says, “Some views or situations call for color, some for Black and White and some for Infrared and I’m always ready with all three. Sometimes, weather conditions prevents setting up the big 4x5 camera so the smaller camera allows photography to proceeds under more difficult situations.” The dedication evident in hauling 20th and 21st century equipment ( of no small volume or weight ) miles into desert or mountain environments by foot speaks to the energy and effort he brings to these endeavors.
The 58 images at Tim A. Fleming’s February show will consist of two printing techniques, A selection of Photographs printed on canvas and stretched like paintings and the rest are traditional B&W and color images printed using modern methods and the best materials and inks to bring out the rich tonality of Tim’s work.
Tim first decided to become a photographer at 11 years old never looked back. “Magazines did it to me, Look, Life and National Geographic. The magazines arrived in the mail every month as far back as I can remember and I studied and absorbed and collected those images. It also helped that there was a little camera store called Hollywood Camera that I passed by every day on my way home from Jr. high school. An old Chinese photographer named Elmer Lew owned the place and he spent a surprising amount of time mentoring me considering my “newspaper route” budget. I went in there much too often and I’m sure I was quite the pest, I just had to know every detail about everything in there.” Said Tim. He has been influenced by photographers like Ansel Adams, Steve Dzgerigian, John Sexton Minor White and the Edward Weston family of photographers as well as many others. He worked for several local photographers and independently studied the Zone system of B&W photography starting in the 1970s, was a founding member of the Spectrum Gallery in 1980, owned and operated a professional photo lab from 1981 to 2001 in Fresno called “Flash Foto” and from 2001 to present has been pursuing a career as a fine art photographer.
Tim has shown his work at over 80 art shows, museums and galleries and his prints are in many personal and institutional collections across the U.S. and Internationally.
Dear Friends,
I would like to invite you to come see what I have done with this gift I've been given: a gift of time, a gift of all the very special photographic tools and beautiful places I have been & combined with some little talents I have. I turned 58 this month, so to celebrate, I am showing (and offering for sale), 58 of my favorite landscape images.
My reception is SUNDAY, February 12th, 2012 from 12 - 6 pm, and there is an Art-Hop mini-reception Feb 2nd from 5-8 pm.
For 10 years, I have made it my quest to search for beautiful images in the deserts of the Southwestern States, the Mountains of California, and along the Pacific Coast. I have been blessed with many safe and productive journeys. Sometimes I traveled with photographer friends who shared with me wondrous new places and new ways of seeing. I am very grateful for their company and the knowledge shared. Other times I set out on my travels alone, but the big surprise was I never felt alone. New friends were waiting for me at every stop, eager to share with me, the locations of nearby and beautiful places. They also told me how to stay safe and sometimes watched over me and I am very thankful for the help I got along the way.
These times have been the most amazing and wonderful times to be photographic artist.
I have had access to better equipment, a dizzying array of software tools and more ways of learning new technical and artistic skills than I ever dreamed could be possible. I even get to share my art (instantly and for free) with thousands of digital pen-pals from around the world on FACEBOOK. If you’re on facebook, please friend me as "Tim A. Fleming". I would also like to offer a big "Thank You" to all the members of Spectrum Gallery for all your great work, keeping this gallery open and going strong. And remember: a percentage of print sales also benefits Spectrum Gallery.
Best wishes,
Tim A. Fleming
